Why Your Bra Might Not Fit — And What You Can Do About It
Most women are wearing the wrong bra size — and don’t even realize it. If your straps slip, your cups gap (or overflow), or your band digs in, it’s not just annoying — it’s a sign that something’s off. In this post, we’ll break down what these common fit issues actually mean, and how a professional fitting can save you from the guessing game.
Straps Slipping?
Yes, sometimes straps just get out of position or stretch over time. But most of the time, slipping straps are actually a sign that your band is too loose.
When the band doesn’t fit snugly, it tends to ride up your back — which creates extra slack in the straps. So before you tighten them, try fastening your bra on the tighter hooks and see if that helps.
Still slipping? It could be the slope of your shoulders. If that’s the case, don’t worry — we have a couple of discreet solutions in-store that can help with that too.
Are Your Cups Gaping — or Runneth Over?
If your cups are either gaping open or spilling over, you’re likely not wearing the right size or style of bra for your body.
The underwire should lie flat against your chest, wrapping smoothly from your sternum to under your arms. If it doesn’t, the shape may not be right for you.
Whether you’re full and naturally lifted or bottom-heavy and softer in tissue will help determine what styles give you the best shape and support. It’s not just about size — it’s about structure.
Band Digging In?
If your band feels like it’s cutting into you, it might be too small — in that specific bra.
Bra sizing can vary widely between brands (and even styles within the same brand), just like jeans or dresses. Don’t be surprised if you’re a 34 in one and a 36 in another. That’s why trying things on — and getting fitted — matters.
Bra Fitting Is Not a DIY Project
Your body isn’t static — it changes through different stages of life: puberty, pregnancy, weight shifts, menopause, and everything in between. So it makes sense that your bra size and shape needs change too.
That’s why we recommend getting a professional bra fitting every time you shop for new bras.
At J. Alane’s, we make fittings private, personalized, and actually helpful. No guessing. No tape measure at home. Just an expert who can help you find what works for your unique shape — and help you feel more confident in the process.
